Think summer in Oaxaca via a tall cold cocktail. That’s what TRES SF mixologist Matty has created for this month’s Distillery of the Month Cocktail featuring Del Maguey’s new Vida Mezcal.

Let’s play a word association game. When I say Oaxaca, you say:

wet >> hot >> humid >> ocean >> salty >> Hefeweizen?

Yes, hefe beer, not jefe boss. When asked, Matt offers that he was inspired by, “just the idea of summer; citrus to go with the Mezcal; ocean and everything out with Oaxaca.” Says he just wanted to do, “something tasty.”

And it is! The cocktail evokes all of those qualities one would naturally associate with Mexico’s coastal state, but in an interesting sleight of a hand Matt reaches for the classic summer libation, hefeweizen, to round out the drink’s profile.

Originally, Matt scored the beverage with the cult following, Bayrischer Bahnof Gose, a wheat beer rich with coriander and salt on the palate, but given most patrons won’t willingly spring for a $24 cocktail (even in San Fran!), he opted for a more neutral hefe; which was probably a good call given the aggressive nature of Mezcal.

Taste this: Oaxacan Summer

1.5 oz Vida Mezcal
1.0 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
.25 oz Agave Nectar
1.0 ea Good Pinch of Salt
To Fill: Hefeweizen Beer
To Garnish: 1.0 ea Sprig of Rosemary

Combine all ingredients. Shake and strain into a Collin’s glass. Fill to the top with a nice summer Hefeweizen (Gose if you got the green). Slap a sprig of Rosemary against your palm and place atop the beverage.
