Don Julio tequila comes to us from the town of Atotonilco in the Los Altos region of Jalisco. The founder and namesake, Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada, began distilling tequila in the year 1942. (Does that number sound familiar? It’s one of our favorite tequilas too!) Originally the tequila he made was reserved only for special events or special friends in the town. In the mid 80′s Don Julio suffered a severe stroke and was temporarily on leave from his craft. When he began feeling back to his old self, his family threw him a fantastic party and honored him by serving his tequila as the special beverage of choice for the evening. Don Julio was thrilled at the idea but wanted to make sure that the bottles wouldn’t prevent the guests from seeing eachother across the table. At the time, the bottles were tall, similar to wine bottles. It was here that he created the short, robust bottles that we have come to know and love as being uniquely Don Julio!
